There’s something dreamy about walking through fields of wildflowers to a hidden lake surrounded by tall mountains and gorgeous scenery. And, just when you think it doesn’t get any better, you likely won’t have large crowds to fight to enjoy this outdoor adventure — you can experience inner peace and nature’s sounds as you hike.
The Branham Lakes Trail, just a short drive from Sheridan, Montana, is a place where you can experience all of this and more. It’s truly picture-perfect.
Approximately 13 miles from the town of Sheridan, you will find the Branham Lakes Campground and Picnic Area. This isn’t a large campground, with only six rustic sites, but it is one of the highest campgrounds in the Treasure State at nearly 9,000 feet in elevation and ideal for some quiet time outdoors. Here, you will find the trailhead to the Branham Lakes Trail.
The Branham Lakes Trail is an out-and-back hike just over three miles. It isn’t the easiest trail in the state, but if you are willing to put forth the effort, you’ll have one dreamy adventure. On this trail, you’ll climb above Branham Lake, capturing some extraordinary views of the area, including Thompson Peak and Bell Lake.
You’ll certainly want a good, sturdy pair of hiking boots for this hike. The trail is well-marked but steep. In fact, you will climb more than 850 feet in elevation in a fairly short distance. There are switchbacks to make the journey a little easier, but be prepared for a physical and mental challenge.
Fortunately, the natural beauty surrounding you will make the hike seem easier and distract you from the difficulty in front of you. As you hike, you’ll walk along the southern tip of Upper Branham Lake. Continue on and you’ll trek through gorgeous meadows that burst with color during the summer months from the breathtaking wildflowers.
There are areas where large boulders line the trail, and you’ll come to overlooks that make you feel like you are on top of the world. Because you are so high and the trail is not too easy, do not rush and take plenty of breaks as needed. Listen to your body as you climb.
When you get to the top of this trail, the views in front of you may make you fall in love with Montana all over again. You’ll spot Bell Lake in the distance and magnificent mountain peaks. At the top, sit, enjoy, and admire the views surrounding you. They are truly magnificent — you don’t want to rush this experience.
The Branham Lakes Trail may not be the easiest hike in Montana, but it’s certainly one of the most scenic. It’s one area of the state that you need to see for yourself — and you may even experience it by yourself. The light traffic on this hike is just one of the many things that make this trail worth seeking out.
