One thing Montana has no shortage of is breathtaking hiking trails. All over the state, you will find trails that inspire and amaze. Places like Glacier National Park, for example, are home to dozens of these bucket-list-worthy trails — hikes that will make you fall in love with Montana all over again. In fact, tucked away in Glacier NP is one trail that is challenging yet worth every step. However, despite the beauty found along this route, it may have the most boring, straight-to-the-point trail name in the Treasure State. It is the Scenic Point Trail.
Most trails in Montana lead you to incredible scenery. Whether in forests, near lakes, through meadows, or up mountains, the landscape on these hikes is truly exquisite. That’s why Scenic Point Trail is such a boring name — it doesn’t let you know why this trail is truly incredible … because it is. This is a hike filled with overlooks where you can see for miles, a lake, wildlife, meadows, valleys, and everything in between.
The Scenic Point Trail is located near East Glacier Park Village in Glacier National Park. This is not a trail for beginner hikers, and preparedness is essential for your climb. This out-and-back trail is just under eight miles — it’ll take you a few hours to complete. It’s also steep, and you will climb nearly 2,400 feet in elevation. You’ll be challenged in many ways, physically and mentally, on this Montana hike.
However, despite the difficulty, this is the type of trail that you’ll never forget. You will walk past Appistoki Falls and Appistoki Creek. You’ll walk through groves of trees, through meadows, and along mountain ridges.
Watch your step as the trail can be quite rocky. Pay attention to the wildflowers that grow along the trail, and watch for wildlife of all sizes. Especially near the top, you may just spot wildlife resting along the side of the trail or completely blocking your way.
This hike will take you to Scenic Point, and there’s no doubt that it’s scenic. On clear days, you will be able to see for miles. I recommend you catch your breath, have a snack, and stay for a while before hiking back down. Enjoy the views and maybe think of some new names for this trail — something a little more exquisite, just like the trail itself.
Keep in mind that the Scenic Point Trail is best in the middle of the summer. If you venture in early spring or late fall, be prepared to encounter snow on your way. If you do venture during these times of the year, you may want to bring snowshoes or microspikes to help you keep your footing. As mentioned earlier, this is one hike for which preparedness is essential.
The Scenic Point Trail in Montana may not have the most creative, dazzling name, but it accurately describes this trail. It’s picturesque, grand, striking, dramatic, and so much more. It’s a hike you won’t soon forget.
