Whether you’re already living in Montana or you’re thinking about making it your full-time residence, we just ranked pretty darn high for best places to live (like we didn’t already know that).
WalletHub compared all 50 states using 51 factors. They used factors from housing affordability and job opportunities to health care quality, safety, and even how many restaurants and hiking trails you have access to. Montana scored solid across the board, especially in quality of life and outdoor opportunities (shocker, right?).

Sure, we might not have the cheapest housing in the nation, but when you factor in wide-open spaces, clean air, endless recreation, and communities that actually care about each other, it’s no surprise we landed in the top third.
Where Does Montana Rank In The Best States To Live In?
WalletHub’s latest study puts us at number 15 in the country. Here’s the breakdown of our ranking…
- Overall 15th
- Total Score: 55.21
- Affordability: 27th
- Economy: 2nd
- Education & Health: 12th
- Quality of Life: 33rd
- Safety: 37th
The top five states on the list were Massachusetts, Idaho, New Jersey, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. So yes, our potato-loving neighbor to the west beat us this time. But we’ll happily trade a few ranking points for fewer people and more elbow room.
