Summer is my favorite time to get out and explore. I love to take scenic drives and tackle the hiking trails around the state. But, I’ve recently discovered that your next best summer experience in Montana may not be by car or in a pair of hiking boots — it’ll be in a canoe. The Clearwater River Canoe Trail is a paddling adventure that isn’t too long, is extremely scenic, and is perfect for a summer day.
If you are looking for your next summer adventure in the Treasure State, the Clearwater River Canoe Trail is my recommendation. Located on a quiet, isolated area of the Clearwater River near Seeley Lake, this unique “trail” gives you a chance to spend time on a gorgeous paddling route and the opportunity to see wildlife of all sizes.
Despite being called a “canoe trail,” this route is perfect for non-motorized watercraft, especially kayaks. The trail is 3.5 miles, and it’ll take approximately two hours to complete at a leisurely pace. The trail’s put-in and put-out spots are near the Seeley Lake Ranger Station, not far from Montana Highway 83. You will drive north from Seeley Lake for approximately four miles on Montana Highway 83. You will then see a Canoe Trail sign, where you will turn west. It is just a short distance on this road until you reach the put-in destination.
The Clearwater River Canoe Trail will take you through a quiet portion of the Clearwater River as well as the northern end of Seeley Lake. Once you cross the northern part of Seeley Lake, you will find a small parking area. You can either shuttle your group back and forth between the put-in and put-out destination, or there is a short hiking trail that will lead you back to the put-in destination.
And while you’ll spend the majority of your time on the water, get ready to view all types of plants and wildlife. During the summer months, look out for wildflowers along the river, including Indian paintbrush, trillium, and buttercups. You may also spot birds of all sizes, fish, turtles, and even a beaver or two splashing and playing in the water.
As always, safety must be a priority before tackling this canoe trail. Always wear flotation vests while paddling, and you’ll want to bring drinking water and possibly a few snacks as well. Just make sure to pack out all garbage with you — please leave no trace. Sun protection, such as hats and sunscreen, is important, and if you plan to hike back, make sure to wear proper footwear.
There are some truly remarkable summer destinations in Montana, but for an afternoon adventure that’s a bit unique, tackle the Clearwater River Canoe Trail. It’s a short, scenic, and unforgettable journey.
