Last summer, we made the trek up the popular Woodbine Falls trail in Montana’s Beartooth Mountains. It’s been two years since the floods, why haven’t these popular trail bridges been replaced yet?
That was the question I asked last summer. Great news, the bridge at Woodbine Falls has now been replaced, and it’s bigger than the old bridge you can see in the file photo above. (Click here for Mack Carmack’s photos and report on the Q2 website)
As Carmack reports, “the original bridge was closer to the creek, made from wood and completely flat. The new bridge is made from metal and sits significantly higher above the water, with a slight arch in the middle.”
She added that the bridge was pre-built and then took about a week to install on site.
Remember those historic floods back in 2022? Campers were stranded at the Woodbine Falls Campground near Nye, and rescued thanks to the great efforts of search and rescue workers.
According to the Custer Gallatin National Forest: “Woodbine Falls Trail (# 9) is 0.8 mile long. Trail begins at Woodbine Campground and climbs steadily to beautiful Woodbine Falls. The trail is open for the following uses: hiking.”
How do you get to Woodbine Falls?
If you’re coming from I90, get off the interstate at Columbus, Montana and head up towards Absarokee and Nye.
Directions from Beartooth Ranger District office(per USFS):
Drive north on US Hwy 212 for 2.1 miles. Turn left (west) onto MT-78 and drive 30 miles. Turn left (west) onto MT-419 towards Fishtail. Drive through Nye and past the Stillwater Mine for 28.7 miles and turn right into the campground. Drive to the back of the campground to find the trailhead.
